Readers
The proclamation of God’s Word is at the heart of every celebration of the Eucharist. Through Scripture, Christ speaks to His people, offering guidance, encouragement, and truth. Our parish is blessed with Lay Readers who help bring the Word of God to life during Mass with clarity, reverence, and faith.
The Ministry of the Word
Lay Readers carry out a vital liturgical ministry. Their role includes:
- Proclaiming the First and Second Readings during Mass.
- Leading the Responsorial Psalm when it is not sung.
- Proclaiming the Prayers of the Faithful, when assigned.
Through their voice and presence, Lay Readers assist the congregation in hearing, understanding, and reflecting on the Scriptures.
Serving with Reverence
Being a Lay Reader is more than a functional task; it is a ministry rooted in prayer and love for God’s Word. Readers are encouraged to:
- Reflect on the readings in advance and pray with them.
- Prepare carefully to ensure clarity, pacing, and expression.
- Proclaim the Scriptures with dignity and confidence.
- Be attentive to the liturgical flow and maintain a prayerful posture.
A well-prepared and reverent reader helps the assembly encounter God’s Word more deeply.
Training and Support
New and experienced readers receive ongoing formation, which may include:
- Guidance on liturgical norms and the role of the Reader.
- Practical training in public proclamation and microphone use.
- Resources for spiritual preparation and understanding Scripture.
This ensures that all readers can serve competently and prayerfully.
A Call to Serve
The ministry of the Lay Reader is open to parishioners who have a clear speaking voice, a love for Scripture, and a desire to serve the community. Adults, young adults, and well-prepared youth may be invited to participate.
If you feel drawn to this ministry, we warmly encourage you to consider it. Serving as a Lay Reader is a wonderful way to deepen your own relationship with Scripture while helping others hear God’s voice.
