What Is the Sacrament of Reconciliation?

The Sacrament of Reconciliation, also known as Penance or Confession, is a way for us to turn back to God when we’ve made mistakes or hurt others. A sin isn’t just doing something wrong; it’s also missing the chance to show love for God or for other people. Sin “wounds our relationship with God and with the Church” (CCC 1440).

Absolution

When we go to Confession, the priest listens to us and, through God’s power, gives us forgiveness.

This is called Absolution. The priest represents both God and the Church community, showing us that God and others welcome us back with love and understanding (CCC 1461-1462).

Ways to Celebrate

  • Individual Confession: You meet one-on-one with a priest to talk about your sins and receive forgiveness.
  • Penitential Services: These are communal celebrations, often held during Advent, Lent, or special parish events. The community prays together, then each person has a private moment with a priest for Absolution (CCC 1483).

Penance

After Confession, the priest gives you a penance —something to do or pray — that helps you show you’re serious about changing and growing closer to God. Penance is about more than just following instructions-it’s a way to heal and make amends (CCC 1450, 1460).

Who can go to Confession?

Anyone who has been baptised and prepared for the sacrament can take part (CCC 1457).

Practical tips for making a good confession

  • Examine Your Conscience
    • The Catechism emphasizes the importance of reflection before confession (CCC
      1454-1455).
    • Take time to think about your actions, thoughts, and words. Ask yourself: “Have I loved God? Have I loved others?”
  • Be Honest
    • Confession works best when you are truthful about your sins. You don’t need to be embarrassed; the priest will help you if you ask.
  • Say Your Sins Clearly
    • You can simply list your sins or explain situations honestly. Even saying “I’ve been impatient, angry, or hurtful” is enough. (CCC 1455)
  • Listen to the Priest
    • The priest may give guidance, encouragement, or a penance to help you grow spiritually.
  • Do Your Penance
    • Completing your penance helps you actively make amends and shows your commitment to change (CCC 1450, 1459).
  • Reflect and Grow
    • After Confession, take time to pray, thank God for His mercy, and think about how to avoid sin in the future.
